Show Running Balance After Each Transaction

Hi SplitMyExpenses Team,

I’d like to suggest a small but helpful feature. After each transaction in a friend's history, could you display the running balance up to that point?

For example:

David C

owes you $20

Transaction C – you paid $16 (Balance: $20)

Transaction B – you paid $5 (Balance: $4)

Transaction A – friend paid $1 (Balance: -$1)

This would make it much easier to track how the balance has changed over time. It would also be really helpful in cases where I want a friend to pay me back only for specific transactions.

    Hi Bryan thanks for the post! Right now, it's a bit hard since user's can edit their old expenses and it will shift everything. They can even edit their old payments. Although this is uncommon, it's not unheard of and is allowed behavior. So it makes tracking things over time a bit harder, since it isn't always very very straightforwards to track balances over time. I think a monthly balance save could be a simpler option here, but real time balance is hard at the moment. This design makes it easier for other things, so it's a bit of an intentional tradeoff here.

      Hi — I’m looking for something slightly simpler than a full historical running balance.

      It would be very helpful to have a “Current Balance Breakdown” that shows how each expense contributes to the present net balance between two users.

      For example:

      Citadines: +$280.53
      Mystays: +$726.38
      Universal Studios: –$402.00

      Total: $2,057.69

      This wouldn’t require preserving historical balances — just a per-expense breakdown of the current net amount.

      That would greatly improve transparency and reconciliation.
